Our Process

We are a multi-generation family wealth planning and investment management practice dedicated to helping your family prepare for the future and make sound financial decisions. We work with a select number of successful families and business owners who value a combination of tailored advice, wealth planning and investment management and a commitment to client service.

Wealth planning is an ongoing process of preparing for and reacting to critical financial events. The cornerstone of this process is our Goal Planning and Modeling tool which is designed to break this down into six simple steps.

Step 1: Review

Every family's financial situation is unique. That's why it's so important to find out as much as we can about you and your financial goals. The more we know about you, the more precise recommendations we can make and the more we can help you. As a result, we may take some time to discuss your hopes, dreams, and objectives, and the things that really matter to you. This is the basis for the first meeting with anyone we sit down with.

Step 2: Analyze

As needed, we will work with you to identify and prioritize your objectives, and then help establish benchmark goals. This is important because we live in a world of unlimited choices. People often fail to achieve objectives because they try to accomplish too much at once, or they don't attach specific deadlines to their goals. By breaking down your goals to specific objectives, you can look at available resources and decide which goals are realistic, and which should be adjusted and scaled down.

Step 3: Develop

Based on our conversation and analysis, we can recommend the steps that it will take to help you achieve your financial goals.

Step 4: Coordinate

We regularly coordinate insurance and financial activities for clients with the other members of their team of financial, tax, and legal advisors. We can do the same for you.

Step 5: Implement

During this session, we will present your big picture plan and the recommended strategies. We’ll also begin unpacking the individual components of the plan and the steps needed to move your objectives forward.

Step 6: Monitor

This is not a one-shot deal. Strategies need to be adjusted periodically as your life and the economy changes. We will work with you over the years to help keep your strategy on track with your changing needs.

Our Fiduciary Duty

When a person has a fiduciary duty to someone, it means that person has a legal and ethical responsibility to act in the best interest of the other person. So what does that mean for you as our client?

As CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® professionals, we are bound to act as fiduciaries for our clients. That means we only recommend something if it’s in your best interest, and we’re obligated to disclose any conflicts of interest regarding your account. While some advisors are incentivized to recommend specific products to earn a higher commission, our commitment is to provide only what we believe is best for our clients. That means we’ll never recommend something to you just because it benefits us or call you simply to sell another product.

For more than 30 years, the CFP® certification has been the standard of excellence in financial planning. CFP® professionals meet rigorous education, training and ethical standards, and are committed to serving their clients' best interests today to prepare them for a more secure tomorrow.

Our Process

When you make investment decisions on behalf of others in your organization, you are a Fiduciary; it is our role to help you to understand this obligation and make plan decisions that are in the best interest of your participants. Our process is designed to focus on the areas that are most likely to expose companies to these issues.

Working with you and your Investment Committee, we will help to determine the most important goals that the Plan is expected to achieve. These might be employee retention or maximizing the benefits for highly compensated employees and owners.

  • Once known, we can advise on the right plan structure and assemble a team of resource providers to achieve the optimal plan.
  • An Investment Policy Statement will be created that guides the selection of investments and serves as a guide for best-practice standards.
  • We favor open architecture investment structures and use the industry best-practice Fiduciary Focus Toolkit to help your Committee evaluate, select and monitor its investments in a manner that complies with the DOL Fiduciary Standards. Comprehensive reports are prepared twice a year to support your DOL requirement to monitor your Plans investment performance and control the Plan expenses.

As your Consultants, and because we are bound by the standards of AIF® and CFP®, you are assured that we try to avoid all conflicts-of-interest and fully disclose any conflicts and compensation both for us and for the vendors used in your Plan. There are no hidden costs.

Our Duty

As Accredited Investment Fiduciary® professionals, we not only uphold the promise to act in your best interest, but we have a legal and ethical responsibility to act according to industry best practices for fiduciary investment management and strategies. This training and designation allow us to perform our fiduciary duties to the best of our abilities, and with your best interest in mind. As AIF® designees, we are equipped with tools and industry knowledge that allow us to serve our clients with comprehensive and trustworthy guidance.

As AIF® professionals, we adhere to these established Prudent Practices® when working with our clients:

  • Employ and provide the client information on the Prudent Practices when serving as an investment fiduciary and/or advising other investment fiduciaries.
  • Act with honesty and integrity and avoid conflicts of interest, real or perceived.
  • Ensure the timely and understandable disclosure of relevant information that is accurate, complete, and objective.
  • Be responsible when determining the value of our services and our form of compensation; taking into consideration the time, skill, experience, and special circumstances involved in providing services.
  • Know the limits of our expertise, and refer our clients to colleagues and/or other professionals in connection with issues beyond our knowledge and skills.
  • Respect the confidentiality of information acquired in the course of our work, and not disclose such information to others, except when authorized or otherwise legally obligated to do so. We will not use confidential information acquired in the course of our work for our own personal advantage.
  • Not exploit any relationship or responsibility that has been entrusted to us.

In order to maintain our designation, we participate in ongoing education each year and have completed a course and exam that demonstrate our understanding of the principles of fiduciary duty and acceptable standards of conduct. Through this training, we also maintain a process to employ our fiduciary responsibility. Our AIF® designation means that we’ve demonstrated our ability to uphold these standards, and we maintain the knowledge and experience that also allow us to assist others in upholding these practices.

When you work with NOVA, you can trust that we only do exactly what’s best for you. We’re committed to upholding a high standard of fiduciary service, which is why we maintain advanced designations that arm us with expertise to serve you with complete trust and confidence.
